In the late 1970s a National Geographic photographer found a colossal, 40-foot-deep hole dug into the center of the Old City of Bukhara—an excavation by Soviet-era archaeologists. Today at the same spot, near the Ulugbek and Abdulazizkhan madrassas, a park shades passersby.
