It was cold coming up the mountain. We crossed a pass at 13,000 feet where the snow was smoothed flat, like glittering marble, by the palm of icy winds. We marred its perfection with our boots. We took the old High Lama Road between the Ku Ba Dian and Kangwu Tibetan temples. The explorer Joseph Rock had walked this way a century ago, collecting plants and words and god knows what else at the rim of the world and carrying a rubber bathtub.
