Milestones are a blind gamble. Today we hit a small jackpot. A square of shade on a broiling Bengal day. A doting old man bouncing his grandchild on a knee. Cool drinks. The customers in the roadside shop invited us back anytime, anytime. Their jokes and bonhomie were worth another 20 kilometers.

A brief question and answer with the first person Paul meets at this Milestone
Mona Sarkar
Lottery ticket seller, about age 40
Who are you?
I am what I am.
Where do you come from?
Coming from home. Obviously.
Where are you going?
To sell lottery tickets. I sell only West Bengal and Nagaland state lottery tickets. Before that I used to do daily wage physical labor work. I don’t gamble myself. Not really. Just sometimes, when I feel like it. (Hurried away.)
