The gray weather matched our mood. We came out of a truck stop town where we’d spent the night and fallen sick. We’d stayed in rooms like prison cells. Earlier, we’d lost our donkey to a fever. We were depressed. Some things you can out-walk. Grief isn’t one of them.

A brief question and answer with the first person Paul meets at this Milestone
Kaptan Singh Rawat
Retired teacher, age 60
Who are you?
I’m a farmer now. I was a teacher for eight to nine years, but then my brother died. Teaching was good because you are educating someone. Teaching is good for your soul. I came back to the village because there was family land that needed to be harvested.
Where do you come from?
I’m from this village. It’s called Thara.
Where are you going?
I was going into the fields. I saw you, and I stopped.
