We were trying to get off the highway. We were tired of walking among the speed zombies. The side trail led through a pretty little village of whitewashed walls and poplar trees whose elongated boughs rocked in the autumn wind. The alleys were pleasingly crooked. The surface of the world underfoot became softer, friendlier, loamy. Then the path led us right back to the highway.

A brief question and answer with the first person Paul meets at this Milestone
Shoira Kholbayeva
Maintenance worker at a women’s clinic, age 45
Who are you?
I clean the women’s clinic.
Where do you come from?
I just dumped my kitchen garbage over there.
Where are you going?
Back to my house. Everything is good here. We’re all working, trying to improve our lives.
Observations from social media from the Milestone location
In this area, some people are celebrating Halloween, while others welcome autumn’s arrival. A tourist quotes the Sufi poet Rumi in one of her photos: “Either be close enough to keep you, or far away to be forgotten!”
