The boon of a hydrocarbon economy. Oil wealth has paved over Azerbaijan, globalized it. But on icy winter mornings, still a tang of older ways: woolly smoke from wood stoves shrouds the foothills of the Greater Caucasus.

Someone is organizing a charity event at their school. Others are tweeting their pride in the city’s nature and its attractions, especially the mountainous regions.
