A brief question and answer with the first person Paul meets at this Milestone
Zülfiye Adsiz
Farmer, “I think I am 40”
Who are you?
My name is Zülfiye Adsiz.
Where are you from?
I’m from Elbini.
Where are you going?
Ha! If you give me 3,000 Euros, I’ll go traveling, too! [Laughs.] No, no, this is a nice place. Happy people, unhappy people, they all live here. But it’s nice. Even the villagers who go to Germany to work are coming back.
Observations from social media from the Milestone location
In the region around Gaziantep, Turkey, pistachios are the primary produce. The city takes its name in inspiration of the nut and its historic economic importance in the region. One person posted photos from a baklava house, and others posted photos of Sanko Park, the popular enclosed mall in the city. Between history and modernity, we see tweets calling for agriculture reform and condolences for dead construction workers and their families. “Being a farmer is a tough job,” wrote one person, alongside photos of pistachio plants.
