The ship’s crewmen were aware of their low status as livestock carriers and that other sailors mocked their butcher’s boat smell, and they wore, many of them, in the presence of a stranger, the blank faces of pariahs, of untouchables. They didn’t want to know their cargo. This was understandable. They were just doing their jobs. They were feeding people. They ignored the eyes of thousands of animals following their every move on deck.

When I am old I will go to my farm in Borama. One thousand meter by long one thousand meter by wide. Big. Big! I will grow vegetables. All kinds. Some cattles. Two camels. Somali camels. A good well. We have. Seventy meters deep. Three cylinders. Strong pump.
