We had just washed ourselves at a camel watering hole. A canyon of black stone led us down into the coastal plain. The trails had been used for centuries by the slave and salt traders of old Afar sultanates. That morning two ground-hugging American fighter jets tore apart the sky with the sound of ripping bedsheets. They were from a base in Djibouti. We watched them standing atop the lowest seam of the Rift Valley. Arabia was pulling way from Africa beneath our feet at the rate of 16 millimeters a year.
This made everything else seem irrelevant.
